Beach Replenishment in Ocean City
Weeks Marine, Inc. was given the beach replenishment project contract by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Beach Replenishment
Ocean City Beach

To help remedy the sand loss in Ocean City from beach erosion because of storms, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers began a beach replenishment effort for Ocean City in the late 1980s. Back then, the Corps of Engineers paid the full $12 million yearly cost for pumping sand from offshore to the beach. Now the city, county and state have to "chip in" to help provide funds for this ongoing project.

From the town of Ocean City Website: "Ocean City’s Beach Replenishment Project is an on going effort. Twice a year the Army Corps of Engineers survey our beach to determine the need for any additional sand. In general, the dredging is on a four year cycle. The last project was completed in 2002. This year (2006) we will be pumping approximately 830,000 cubic yards of sand."

That, indeed, is a lot of sand castles. :)

Ocean City's Beach Replenishment
The dredge ship, B.E. Lindholm, hundreds of yards offshore vacuums up sand from the ocean floor. It then hooks up to a large pipe to transfer the sand to shore.

The large pipes carry the sand slurry (sand and water mixture) to the place where the beach is currently being worked on/built up. The water runs back to into the ocean, but the heavier sand remains on the beach.

Bulldozers move the sand from the pipe discharge points to spread it evenly along the beach, building it to a pre-determined height.
